D. Shawn Stevens has been representing and seeking justice for those injured and the families of those killed — fighting insurance companies and holding accountable those responsible for the injuries or deaths of others — since 2002.
Mr. Stevens is a 5th-generation Texan whose family has lived in Texas since 1870, and he is proud to fulfill his calling to passionately advocate for and represent fellow Texans whose lives have been turned upside down through no fault of their own. Born in Abilene, Texas, Shawn attended Cooper High School there before relocating to Austin, Texas with his family, where he graduated from Crockett High School. After that, Shawn worked his way through college at Texas A&M University in College Station. One night there while he was returning home, Shawn was hit from behind on campus by a drunk driver while he was stopped at a stop sign and the force of the collision knocked him unconscious. The resulting injuries kept Mr. Stevens from being able to work for 5 months, and the aftermath of the resulting physical and economic challenges left him with a deep understanding of and empathy for the personal injury clients he now represents. He has persevered and lived through the personal discouragement and stress insurance company stonewalling and denial of claims causes, and he draws from that personal experience while fighting for his clients today.
Mr. Stevens worked for some years as a computer hardware and networking expert. He continued working in that field while he began law school at night and even ran the Y2K Software Test Lab for Reliant Energy in Houston in preparation for their Y2K rollover. After finishing that project, he finished law school as a full-time student.
As an attorney, Mr. Stevens received the Outstanding Sole Practitioner award in 2004 from the Dallas Bar Association’s Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program for his pro bono work helping single mothers obtain child support and he is a member of the Pro Bono College of the State Bar of Texas. Mr. Stevens is currently a Director Emeritus of the Dallas Trial Lawyers Association, and has served on Board of Directors for both the DTLA and Texas Trial Lawyers Association for over a decade each. Having represented numerous personal injury and other clients over his two decades as an attorney, Mr. Stevens recently finished a medical malpractice and product liability battle lasting more than 3 years in which he successfully obtained seven figures in settlements representing multiple clients that were partially blinded as a result of cataract surgery in January and February of 2017 at Key-Whitman Eye Center in Dallas, Texas.
Shawn’s public service includes working in the Texas Capitol building as a Legislative Assistant to a State Representative member of the Texas House of Representatives. While doing so he was not only deeply involved in a historic reformation of the Texas House Rules of Procedure, he also spearheaded the successful effort to convince legislative leadership to put legislative information on the Internet for the first time. Additionally, he is an active advocate for participatory democracy and voting rights, works to protect Texas citizens’ right to vote, and was not only elected three times as Chairman of the Democratic Party of Collin County, but he also served one term on the State Democratic Executive Committee while Vice-President of Texas Environmental Democrats.
Shawn enjoys spending time with his wife of more than 23 years, restoring old cars, backpacking, fishing, wildlife and landscape photography, and scuba diving, as an international award-winning underwater photographer.
