What is Viagra?
The first erectile dysfunction(ED) drug, Viagra, was developed accidentally. Originally Pfizer was testing the active ingredient in Viagra, sildenafil, for cardiovascular use and its ability to lower blood pressure. Patients ended up reporting cases of long lasting erections, some refusing to return the medication for personal use. ED drugs were born as a side effect, and as it turns out, they have more than a handful of side effects themselves.
Dangerous Viagra Side Effects
Erectile dysfunction medication side effects have included heart attacks, strokes, vision problems and hearing troubles. In July 2005, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ordered that warnings about vision loss be added to erectile dysfunction medication labels, leading to a series of lawsuits filed against erectile dysfunction drug manufacturers. Now a new series of lawsuits are being filed against the makers of Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra in connection with reports of an increased risk of skin cancer. Currently there are no cancer warning labels on any of the erectile dysfunction drug labels, creating a potential failure to warn liability.

What is the Link Between Viagra and Melanoma?
Viagra(sildenafil) acts as a potent PDE5A (an enzyme) inhibitor. In 2011 a study was published stating low PDE5A expression allows for the pervasiveness of melanoma cells. This was a beginning piece of evidence that current erectile dysfunction drugs inhibit an enzyme that helps protect the body from skin cancer. Later in 2014 a more comprehensive study was finalized involving an analysis of over 25,848 men taking sildenafil (Viagra). The results showed that Viagra nearly doubled the chance for men to develop the deadly skin cancer melanoma. The study also recommends further investigation into the link between melanoma and erectile dysfunction drugs that inhibit PDE5A.
Who Can Be Held Liable in a Viagra Lawsuit?
As of yet the manufacturers of ED drugs have failed to warn consumers of this potential increase in risk for skin cancer. The manufacturers may be held liable in a lawsuit should you or anyone you know suffer from skin cancer related to the consumption of these erectile dysfunction drugs.
