The Elmiron lawsuit lawyers at Loncar Lyons Jenkins are now accepting cases for women whose vision was irreparably damaged by their use of the medication, pentosan polysulfate, more commonly known by its brand name, Elmiron®.
For individuals diagnosed with maculopathy, also called pigmentary/retinal maculopathy, or retinitis pigmentosa after using Elmiron®, the updated labeling information from June 16, 2020, likely triggers a legal deadline to file suit or the claim will be barred forever.
It is critical that individuals already diagnosed with maculopathy or retinitis pigmentosa have their claims examined by a law firm experienced in pharmaceutical litigation immediately. Time is quickly running out to investigate and file your case.
Elmiron® Is Used to Treat Interstitial Cystitis (IC). Elmiron® is most commonly prescribed to women who have been diagnosed with interstitial cystitis (“IC”), also referred to as painful bladder syndrome by many physicians. Elmiron® is often prescribed to women who have the symptoms of IC, whether they have actually been diagnosed with the condition or not.
The syndrome is characterized by pain and pressure in the bladder area resulting in urgency, frequency, even painful intercourse. A urologist we work with describes it as “a UTI without an infection.”
There is no cure for IC but Elmiron® was approved for use by the FDA in September of 1996 and has been prescribed to alleviate the symptoms by allegedly preventing inflammation and irritation of the bladder walls.
Because Elmiron® only treats the symptoms of painful bladder syndrome, most patients use the medication for extended periods of time.
Independent studies began revealing a troublesome link between Elmiron and irreversible vision damage in long-term users as far back as 2015. It is likely the manufacturers knew or should have known about the links to permanent vision damage – a statistical analysis of vision claims among Elmiron® users in California’s Kaiser Permanente system suggests as many as 1 in 4 long-term users may have suffered a retinal injury.

In June of 2020, the labeling information was quietly revised to warn of possible permanent vision damage as a result of long-term use. Your prescriber may not have told you of the revised labeling information because they were not aware of the change. For many victims, the warning was simply too late.
Due to the manufacturer’s failure to properly label Elmiron® it is likely many victims were incorrectly diagnosed with pattern dystrophy or macular degeneration.
If you used Elmiron® for three years or more and are experiencing significant vision problems, it is important to have your retinas examined immediately. If you are under the care of an ophthalmologist or retina specialist, it is critical that you notify them of your long-term exposure to Elmiron®. Treatment options are available, but it is critical to initiate proper medical care as soon as possible.
Symptoms of retina damage may include:
If you experienced any of these symptoms after taking Elmiron®, you may have a personal injury claim. The Elmiron lawsuit lawyers at Loncar Lyon Jenkins can investigate your case and help you pursue compensation.
