Mirena Lawsuit Lawyer

If you have used the Mirena IUD and have experienced complications that required laparoscopic surgical removal of the device or have experienced pseudotumor cerebri, contact a Mirena lawsuit lawyer at Loncar Lyon Jenkins immediately to discuss your legal rights. You may be owed financial compensation by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals.

What is Mirena?

Mirena is a type of long-acting, reversible birth control called a hormonal intrauterine device (IUD). An IUD is a small, flexible, T-shaped birth control device that is implanted in the uterus. It is meant to be used over a long period of time before being replaced, thus removing the need for daily medication.

This particular birth control device is manufactured by Bayer Pharmaceuticals. The Mirena IUD uses levonorgestrel – a progestin birth control hormone – and slowly releases a small amount into the uterus over time. Because it releases hormones directly into the uterus, it releases a lower level of hormones into the body than oral contraceptive pills. Mirena is unique among forms of birth control as it is not only classified as a medical device but also a medication due to the release of levonorgestrel.

Mirena was approved in 2000 by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is one of two hormonal IUDs approved for use in the United States. In 2009, the FDA expanded Mirena’s approval to treat heavy menstrual bleeding in women already using an intrauterine device. It is more than 99 percent effective in controlling pregnancy for up to 5 years, at which point the implant must be replaced. Mirena is recommended for women who have already had a child.

Is Mirena Dangerous?

Mirena is highly effective at preventing pregnancy, but some women may experience dangerous, life-threatening side effects such as perforation of the uterus, pelvic inflammatory disease, and ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy that occurs outside the uterus). The device may also spontaneously move from the uterus and embed in other parts of the body such as the uterine wall or abdomen, requiring difficult surgery to remove. Women who have experienced some of these side effects filed lawsuits against Bayer claiming that the company did not properly warn of these side effects.

Mirena Lawsuits

Mirena litigation has been ongoing for quite some time and, unfortunately, Loncar Lyon Jenkins no longer handles claims associated with the Mirena IUD itself. There are rare exceptions to this, however, and we will evaluate each claim on a case-by-case basis. If you believe you were severely injured by the device, contact us immediately. The Mirena lawsuit lawyers at Loncar Lyon Jenkins can review your case and discuss what options may be available to you.

Mirena IUD Complications

Despite no longer handling claims related to the damages caused by the Mirena IUD itself, there are pharmacological issues to contend with. Loncar Lyon Jenkins has become aware that the Mirena IUD may increase the chances of developing pseudotumor cerebri (also known as intracranial hypertension or benign intracranial hypertension), creating a new potential avenue for legal action against the manufacturers.

Studies suggest levonorgestrel medication released from the device increases the risk for this condition, according to a study published by Neuroopthamology. Pseudotumor cerebri is a neurological condition resulting from an abnormal elevation of cerebrospinal fluid in the skull. This medical condition creates a dangerous increase of fluid pressure in the skull, mimicking symptoms of a brain tumor. These symptoms include:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Obscuration (grey spots, dimming or blackout of vision)
  • Diplopia (double vision) or blurred vision
  • Tinnitus (buzzing in the ears)
  • Blindness

Untreated pseudotumor cerebri can progress into optic nerve complications causing complete blindness. Diagnosis of pseudotumor cerebri is typically done via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or spinal tap. Treatments vary from medication to a surgically implanted shunt that drains the buildup of fluid from the brain, thus alleviating the dangerous increase of fluid pressure.
