Auto Insurance Requirements for Uber Drivers

To become an Uber driver, an individual must have personal auto insurance that extends past the state’s minimum requirements. The exact amount of coverage that’s required will depend on the rideshare driving period.

App is Off

When the Uber app is off and the driver is using their auto insurance, they are only required to have the state’s minimum insurance coverage:

$30,000 of bodily injury liability coverage per person injured in an accident
$60,000 of bodily injury liability coverage per collision
$25,000 of liability coverage for property damage per collision

Period One

When the driver is actively using the Uber app and waiting for a ride request, they must have a higher level of liability coverage:

$50,000 of bodily injury liability coverage per person injured in a car crash
$100,000 of bodily injury liability coverage per collision
$25,000 of liability coverage for property damage per collision
